KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18: Seputeh MP Teresa Kok today claimed that a minister visited Turkey from July 3 to 7 and attended Dewan Rakyat on July 13.
Kok told the Dewan Rakyat that the minister in question was in charge of plantation industries and commodities.
“We know that whoever goes overseas needs to undergo quarantine for 14 days. But this minister did not comply (with the quarantine rules),” the DAP lawmaker said.
She asked if the health ministry or Parliament should take action against him.
Former deputy health minister Lee Boon Chye, who was debating on the Temporary Measures for Reducing the Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) Bill 2020, said action should be taken if the claim was true.
“There should be no double standards,” he added.
RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) urged Parliament to take action against the minister as he might have exposed others to the coronavirus.
Deputy Speaker Mohd Rashid Hasnon asked Kok and Rayer to write to him on the matter.
However, Rayer said immediate action should be taken as the minister could be endangering the lives of others. “He is not following the government’s rules.”
Earlier, Lee suggested that the government make it mandatory for those entering the country to wear global positioning system devices.
He said these tracking devices would ensure that Covid-19 clusters like the Sivagangga cluster – which saw 45 cases with third-generation infections – would not happen again.
