PETALING JAYA,Dec 1: Human Resources Minister M Saravanan says the government’s wage subsidy programme (WSP) has prevented more than 3.3 million workers from losing their jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a written parliamentary reply, he said the programme has benefited 331,950 employers and more than 2.7 million workers up to Nov 6, with RM12.21 billion channelled to bosses under the scheme.

“Meanwhile, for WSP 2.0 from Oct 1 to Nov 6, Socso received 61,382 applications from employers involving 611,276 workers. Payments worth RM122.19 million has been utilised by the employers.

“This programme has successfully kept more than 3.3 million workers from losing their jobs. The government is confident that the extension of the WSP 2.0 to the end of December will benefit more employers and affected workers.

“Overall, the implementation of WSP has given a significant effect in curbing job losses and companies from shutting down operations,” he said.

He was answering Hassan Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) who asked how many companies have benefited from the scheme and how effective iut has been in preventing job losses and firm closures.
