PONTIAN, July 31 — Pontian is in for better times with the upgrading of the Pontian District Council (MDP) to Pontian Municipal Council (MPPn), which is in line with the aspiration of the Johor government that stresses on comprehensive development for the people.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the change in status would also boost the municipality’s annual revenue collection to enable it to provide better services and facilities to the local communities.

“Today we witnessed a historic day for the district of Pontian when the Pontian District Council is declared as the Pontian Municipal Council.

“This means that the services to residents in Pontian too can be upgraded and development plans can be conducted in a bigger and more comprehensive way.

“I am also confident that the upgrading will also increase the revenue of the council and at the same time the basic facilities can also be improved and upgraded from time to time,” he said.

He was speaking to the media after attending an MPPn Prihatin Food Baskets Contribution event in conjunction with the declaration of MDP as MPPn here, today.

In conjunction with the declaration, MPPn provided food baskets worth RM1 million to rate payers and residents under the local authority who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Oct 13, 2019, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin had said that the MDP met the criteria to be upgraded to MPPn based on its annual revenue collection of over RM20 million and the district had a population of almost 200,000.
