KUALA PILAH,  Aug 7 — The worries of a single mother of four children, two of whom have disabilities, were lessened when she received some food assistance today.

Rafiah Yaacob, 60, a widow, was forced to stop working as a cleaner at a school 22 years ago as she needed to tend to her two children, Muhamad Izham Ahmad Syukri, 36, and Nur Izzwanee Ahmad Syukri, 26, who have learning disabilities.

Not blaming fate for her difficulties, Rafiah remained strong and determined, and resorted to selling local kuih to eke out a living.

“My eldest son, Muhamad Izham, also has trouble walking in addition to his learning disability and I need to assist him. So I need to divide my time between trying to earn and managing the children at home,” she told Bernama.

Rafiah received the food basket aid from Kuala Pilah MP Datuk Eddin Syazlee Shith.

Meanwhile, another single mother, Norsitah Yassin said the assistance would help reduce her burden for daily necessities for at least this month.

Norsitah, 62, who relies fully on the RM500 monthly financial aid from the Social Welfare Department  was touched to receive the food basket.

“The monthly RM500 assistance is used to pay utility bills and such. I myself am too exhausted to go out to the supermarket to buy necessities, so, I am grateful to the government for being concerned with the people, especially those in need,” she said.
