KUCHING, Aug 10 — Bank Rakyat, in collaboration with Yayasan Telekom Malaysia (YTM), contribute tablets to 240 asnaf (zakat recipient) students, aged seven to 17, worth RM105,000 to help them with the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) sessions.

Bank Rakyat, in a statement today, said Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through YTM, also contributed 740 #BEBAS Mobile unifi SIM cards worth over RM180,000 to students, both from public schools and Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM).

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar handed over the contributions to 40 of the recipients in conjunction with the launching of the BR Didik Digital Programme in Santubong, about 40 kilometres from here today.

Wan Junaidi said the ministry lauded the cooperation programme between Bank Rakyat and YTM because during the COVID-19 pandemic, many were still impacted especially students whose families were struggling in the new normal.

He said such strategic cooperation was an effort to make education inclusive and it was hoped that it could, to an extent, help students in their learning sessions.

Bank Rakyat chairman, Datuk Abd Rani Lebai Jaafar, said the BR Didik Digital Programme was also in line with the National Education System Transformation towards Digital Education System, aimed at boosting the skills of teachers and students in the use of information technology devices.

He said the contributions of tablets and internet data were in line with the Bank Rakyat’s Five-Year Strategic Plan 2025 (BR25) which included the aspirations of the Bank Rakyat’s Sustainable Development Plan and further achieving the bank’s ideology.

Bank Rakyat’s chief executive officer, Datuk Syed Abdul Aziz Syed Hassan said the programme was one of the initiatives in implementing the Bank Rakyat’s Sustainability Framework’s mission to provide continuous community development and ensure inclusive and quality education.

Meanwhile, YTM’s member of the Board of Trustees and TM Group chief executive officer, Imri Moktar said through continuous commitment in driving Malaysia into becoming a digital nation, YTM believed every student had the right to obtain equal education regardless of location and social status of their family.

Other than in Sarawak, this aid would also be channelled to students in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jalan Raja Syed Alwi Kangar (Perlis); Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tunku Putra Langkawi (Kedah); SMK Paloh Gua Musang (Kelantan); SMK Kerteh (Terengganu); SK Satu, Jalan Hospital, Tapah (Perak) and SMK Taun Gusi Kota Belud (Sabah).

Students from selected MRSM branches also received internet data from YTM including in Arau (Perlis); Langkawi (Kedah);, Balik Pulau (Penang); Taiping (Perak); Serting (Negeri Sembilan); Terendak Camp (Melaka); Muar (Johor); Kuantan (Pahang), Terengganu and Pengkalan Chepa (Kelantan).
