BEIJING , Feb 7 – Malaysia’s Alpine skier Aruwin Salehhuddin finished a respectable 38th overall in the women’s giant slalom on her Winter Olympics debut in Beijing yesterday.

Aruwin managed a timing of one minute and 6.13 seconds on her first run at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre.

The 17-year-old then followed it up with similar time of 1:06.15s on her second run for a total of 2:12.28s which placed her 38th out of 82 skiers who started the competition.

Sweden’s Sara Hector took the gold on 1:55.69s while Italy’s Federica Brignone (1:55.97s) and Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami (1:56.41s) came in second and third.

Aruwin, who is the first ever Malaysian woman to compete in the Winter Olympics, is also the youngest to represent the nation at the games.

Team manager Salehhuddin Ayob, who is also Aruwin’s father, had not set any lofty expectations for the latter in Beijing as she is still gaining experience.

Aruwin will also compete in the women’s slalom event tomorrow.

Jeffrey Webb, the other athlete in the national team in Beijing, will compete in the men’s slalom on Feb 16.

This is Jeffrey’s second appearance at the Winter games.
