KANGAR, April 23 — The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM), which is aware of the potential of mobilising the creative industry to generate income for the community, has introduced the ‘Riuh Keluarga Malaysia’ programme as an effort to ignite creative industry activities in the states.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said it was the intention of K-KOMM to increase the creative industry’s contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“We hope the creative industry will increase from four per cent previously to a higher level, namely to seven per cent in stages after this,” he told reporters after the breaking of fast event here tonight.

Also present were Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim, Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin and Perlis executive councillors.

Annuar said his focus on the creative industry was not as a hobby or part-time but one that could be translated into income-generating programmes.

He said that according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the creative industry is very broad as it included painting, visual arts, dance, fashion and many more.

He said it had the potential to contribute to economic growth and that the ‘Riuh’ programme was a platform for art enthusiasts to commercialise their activities.
