MADRID, May 27 — The number of confirmed monkeypox cases in Spain rose to 84 on Thursday after the country’s Ministry of Health reported another 25 new cases.

The ministry said that those infected are all suffering from “mild symptoms” and are currently isolating in their homes in line with the established protocols.

The majority of the cases have been reported in the Madrid region, but other cases have also been confirmed in the Canary Islands, the Basque Region and Andalusia, Xinhua reported.

Health Minister Carolina Darias said Wednesday that Spain would buy monkeypox vaccines and anti-viral treatments as part of the European Union joint purchase.

Meanwhile, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) on Thursday confirmed 10 more cases of monkeypox in Canada.

PHAC said in a statement that in addition to the previously reported 16 confirmed cases in Quebec, there are now 26 confirmed cases in Canada which broke down into 25 in Quebec and one in Ontario.

According to the statement, it is likely that additional cases will be reported in the coming days as PHAC’s National Microbiology Laboratory is continuing to receive samples for confirmatory testing from multiple jurisdictions.

The United States has also confirmed nine monkeypox cases across seven states, said the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday.

“These cases were suspected by local clinicians. They were identified by local laboratories and triggered local public health action to help with treatment and management of any potential contacts,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a press briefing.

The nine cases have been identified in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Utah, Virginia and Washington state.

Some of the nine cases have a recent history of international travel to areas with active monkeypox outbreaks, Walensky said.

Human cases of monkeypox have been recently reported in over 20 countries worldwide.
