MELAKA, July 22 — The Klebang People’s Housing (PPR) project, which was abandoned for almost four years, is now being rehabilitated and its construction is expected to be completed in December next year.
Klebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong said a new contractor had been appointed by the Housing and Local Government Ministry to rehabilitate the project, which initially cost RM42mil.
He said the Klebang state constituency development and coordination committee office would monitor the progress of the project’s rehabilitation to ensure that it was carried out according to the stipulated schedule and completed within the given period.
“Construction for Klebang PPR started in February 2016 and was supposed to be completed by the end of 2018, but work stopped after Pakatan Harapan took over Melaka in May that year.
“The Klebang PPR project was 90% completed at the time, with the remaining works only involving infrastructure and facilities in the surrounding area, including the drainage system and roads,” Lim was quoted by Bernama after visiting the Klebang PPR site here yesterday.
He added that based on the assessment by the new contractor, the 14-storey building as well as the lift had suffered much damage because the project had been abandoned for some time.
The assessment would also take into account the building’s safety, he added.
Lim said the Klebang PPR project was developed by the government to provide an opportunity to the people, especially the B40 group and the disabled, to own a home.
“I was told that all the units already had buyers,” he said, adding that the project comprised two blocks of flats, involving 255 units of three-room homes and facilities such as a community hall, kindergarten and surau.
