FRANKFURT, Germany, Feb 16 (Bernama) — After cable damage at a Frankfurt construction site led to chaos at German airline Lufthansa, operations were back to normal a day later, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

There were currently no cancellations or delays, she said.

According to the airline, construction work on a commuter train line in Frankfurt caused Lufthansa’s computer systems to fail on Wednesday. That lead to delays and cancellations for thousands of passengers with connections via the Frankfurt Airport hub, where 230 of 1,000 planned flights were cancelled by midday.

According to German telecommunications provider Deutsche Telekom, four fibre-optic cables were cut by an excavator on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, it was no longer possible to reroute Lufthansa’s data traffic via replacement lines.

In the afternoon, the airport was reopened for landings after being closed for about three hours, reported German news agency dpa.

The chaos came as Germany is bracing for nationwide flight cancellations due to strikes on Friday.

Several of the country’s major airports, including Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Hamburg, will be affected, with thousands of flights into and out of Germany already cancelled.
