KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Schools nationwide have been told to stop all outdoor activities, including cross country running, amid a heatwave.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry sent out a circular two days ago informing all principals and school administrations of this decision, Utusan Malaysia reported today.

“The ban is for all morning and evening schoolers where we want the studies to be fully conducted inside the classrooms,” Fadhlina was quoted as telling reporters after a visit to Tanjung Karang, Selangor yesterday.

Fadhlina said the latest order is in line to relax the dress code at schools.

The Education Ministry had earlier issued special permission allowing students, teachers and other staff to wear suitable sports attire instead of their uniforms or work attire during the hot weather to prevent health problems.

Malaysia has seen temperatures soaring the past two months.

Latest information on hot weather status can be obtained at MetMalaysia website, and preventive measures to reduce health effects can be obtained at the Health Ministry website.
