10 killed, 251 injured in toxic gas leak at Jordan’s port

AMMAN, June 28 — Ten people were killed and 251 others injured on Monday in a chemical gas leak from a container at Jordan’s Aqaba port, Xinhua news agency quoted the country’s Public Security Directorate as saying in a statement.

Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs Faisal Shboul said that medical teams have been sent to Aqaba to treat the injured in large numbers, state-run Al Mamlaka TV reported.

Director of Aqaba Health Department Jamal Obeidat urged local residents to stay indoors, away from the toxic gas spreading through the city.

Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh has called for forming a team to investigate the incident.

The team, headed by Interior Minister Mazen Faraya, will take all necessary measures, the prime minister said in a statement.
