PUTRAJAYA, May 22  — A total of 78 new COVID-19 positive cases were recorded today, bringing the cumulative number of cases in the country to 7,137, with 1,163 active infectivity cases, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said of the 78 new cases, 25 were imported cases and 53 were local infections.

“Of the 53 local infections, 40 involve non-Malaysians  with 25 of them detected at the Immigration Depot in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur,” he told a daily media conference on COVID-19 here today.

He said there were 63 recoveries today, bringing the total of those who have recovered from COVID-19 and discharged from hospital to  5,859 cases (82.1 per cent).

One death was reported today, bringing the cumulative number of death due to COVID-19 in the country to 115 or 1.61 per cent of the total cases, he added.

“The 115th death case involved a 65-year-old local man with diabetes, hypertension and kidney problem.

“He was treated at the Sungai Buloh Hospital on April 3 and pronounced dead on May 21 at 2.58 pm,” he added.

Dr Noor Hisham said to date, nine COVID-19 positive cases were being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with five in need of respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, he advised the public to maintain a responsible attitude when carrying out any activities outdoor or at home, including in preparing for the Aidilfitri celebration.

The Health Ministry, he said, would continue to monitor the incidence of local and foreign COVID-19 infections through information from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
