IPOH, Dec 5  — Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu resigned today as the menteri besar of Perak, along with the state executive councillors.

Ahmad Faizal, who lost a confidence vote in the state legislative assembly yesterday, said he presented the resignation letters to the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, at an audience with His Royal Highness at 3 pm today at Istana Kinta here.

“I expressed my gratitude and respect to the sultan for having accorded me the honour to serve under the auspices of His Royal Highness’ government.

“I presented my resignation letter and those of all the state executive councillors to His Royal Highness,” he told a press conference at the old residence of the Perak menteri besar here.

Ahmad Faizal, who is the assemblymanfor Chenderiang, lost a confidence vote in the 59-seat state legislative assembly yesterday.

He garnered 10 votes. Forty-eight assemblymen voted against him and one abstained. The motion was brought by Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblyman for Pengkalan Baru Datuk Abd Manap Hashim.

Asked when the resignation would be effective, Ahmad Faizal said it was up to Sultan Nazrin to consent the date.

Ahmad Faizal said he represented the Exco in thanking the Perak state government administration and described his stint as very meaning and full of challenges.

“I have tried my best and as a human I may have made mistakes, please accept my apologises,” he said.

Ahmad Faizal who is Bersatu deputy president was reappointed as Perak Menteri Besar under the Perikatan Nasional government formed through a mandate of 32 assemblymen on March 13 after Bersatu withdrew from Pakatan Harapan (PH).

He had earlier led the PH government after the 14th general election in 2018. The PH Perak government fell on March 10 after Ahmad Faizal resigned.

In this regard, Ahmad Faizal advised that no parties should avenge what happened in Perak in other states as issues can be settled amicably.

“Do not seek revenge in politics, surely there are ways we can resolve matters.

“Everyone is shocked with what had happened. I am calling for calm and patience because in Perak we have resolved our problem, states which are running smoothly should not be disrupted,” he said

He was commenting on a statement by Osman Sapian (Bersatu-Kempas) who saw what occurred in Perak may happen to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad of UMNO.
