KUALA LUMPUR,Dec 10: Police arrested 217 individuals yesterday for offences against the movement control order (MCO), said Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a statement today, he said 210 people were issued compound fines while the remaining seven were remanded.

Most of the offences, he said, were for failing to wear face masks.

Among the other offences included failure to observe physical distancing, failure to provide materials for contact tracing or registration, and taking part in activities at entertainment centres.

A total of 2,991 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

Ismail also said police detained 67 undocumented migrants and two smugglers yesterday under Ops Benteng. Four vehicles and eight boats were also confiscated.

He added that 85,383 people arrived through KLIA from July 24 to Dec 9 from various countries.

A total of 542 people tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 72,215 have been allowed to return home.

Some 12,626 people are currently undergoing mandatory quarantine.
