KUALA LUMPUR,Jan 7: The Umno Supreme Council has deferred any decision on the party’s support for PPBM to its annual general assembly at the end of this month.
The highest decision-making body met tonight amid reports of a widening rift between notable party leaders over Umno’s continued support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
This latest development follows most of the 191 party divisions calling for Umno to withdraw its cooperation with PPBM, and the sacking of Ketereh MP Annuar Musa as the Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Tuesday.
In a statement, Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan said the meeting yesterday had discussed motions brought up by 189 party divisions nationwide, among which was the issue of the party withdrawing its support for PPBM.
Other motions include calling for snap elections by the end of March this year and strengthening the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with PAS.
“The meeting then agreed to bring the motions to the Umno general assembly on Jan 31, 2021 for them to be debated and decided on at the highest level of the party, as provided for by the party’s constitution.”
Shahril added that the decision was made as the matter had touched on fundamental party policies that would have major implications on the party and the country.
He also said the party constitution had stated that motions brought forward by party divisions must be discussed at the general assembly.
