SEGAMAT, April 16  — The government has approved an allocation of about RM5.8 million to the Segamat Municipal Council (MPS) to build and upgrade public facilities to help boost economic and tourism activities as well as income of the locals.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin said the construction and upgrading projects involved six locations with five of them in the Segamat parliamentary constituency while another one in Pemanis state constituency under the Sekijang parliamentary constituency.

“Segamat has the potential, this area is a little bit far from the main highway, so, in terms of development, it is still a little bit behind. It is time for the state and federal governments to focus on Segamat,” she told a press conference after visiting the Jementah market here today.

Of the total, she said RM2 million was allocated to build a recreation centre on the banks of Sungai Segamat, Jalan Sultan and RM1 million to upgrade the Jementah market and the bus terminal in Jementah town.

She added that a total of RM1.5 million was also allocated for the development of the MPS food court in Jabi town and convenience stalls in Jalan Aji while the remaining RM1.3 million was for the construction of Dataran Yayasan and food court in Taman Yayasan.

Zuraida said all the construction and upgrading projects were expected to start this year and will take between two and three years to complete.
