KOTA BHARU, April 25  — The current enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Kelantan does not stop a family of martabak sellers from receiving encouraging demand this Ramadan.

‘Martabak Kadok’, which has been known to the residents around here for the past 25 years, only operates at the front steps of the owner’s home in Kampung Kadok, Jalan Ketereh-Kota Bharu, near here.

Ahmad Rais Fikri Rosli, 28, together with his father, Rosli Mohamad, 54, and mother Kamisah Ab Majid, 52, prepare more than 1,000 martabak per day this Ramadan.

“At 1 pm, customers start making a beeline for our martabak as their breaking fast dish,” Ahmad Rais Fikri told reporters when met at his house here today.

Elaborating further, he said before Ramadan, only 300 martabak were sold including the frozen ones he made to fulfill orders from outside Kelantan, including overseas such as Singapore, Dubai and Makkah.

“Martabak with chicken and beef fillings is our customers’ favourites, sold at RM5 each.  Customers are also offered martabak with special fillings such as cheese and banana which is sold at RM7 and RM8 respectively,” he said, adding that he was assisted by 14 workers.

The eldest of five siblings said he spent more than RM2,000 a day to buy 12 kg of chicken, 20 kg of beef and 1,700 eggs to make martabak.

“Even though the price of raw materials has increased, this martabak is still sold at RM5 a piece and what makes it special is that it uses local meat and fresh chicken…the size is also quite big which is about 400 grammes each.

“Usually, my mother will cook the fillings the night before,” he added.
