Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Friday opened its first desert-crossing expressway that shortens the travel time from the regional capital of Urumqi to the northernmost Altay region almost by half. The 343km-long S21 Altay-Urumqi Expressway has more than 150 kilometers passing through the Gurbantunggut Desert, the second largest desert in China.
