KEPALA BATAS, June 17 — The Penang State Education Department (JPN) has successfully collected a total of 16,200 Teachers’ Day-themed poems to gain an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).

State education director Abdul Rashid Abdul Samad said all the poems were written by pupils and students throughout the state from May 19 until yesterday.

“Initially, our target was to collect 6,000 poems in one month to be recorded in the MBOR in conjunction with the state-level Teacher’s Day celebration. Alhamdulillah, the response received was very encouraging and we managed to collect 16,200 poems in total.

“The figure has allowed us to be listed in the MBOR for the most number of Teacher’s Day-related poems and this is the second time we earned the recognition after the most number of cakes in conjunction with Teacher’s Day, last year,” he told reporters here last night.

Abdul Rashid was met at the state-level Teacher’s Day Appreciation Dinner and Closing Ceremony which was officiated by Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

At the ceremony, Penang JPN’s former Deputy Director of Education (Planning and Management Sector), Ismail Mohd Said, 62, was named the recipient of the Tokoh Guru award, while former Director of the School Management Division, Ministry of Education, Datuk Mohd Jam Mohamed, 61, received the Tokoh Kepimpinan award.

Both of them received flight tickets to perform umrah, medals and certificates.
