KUCHING, Aug 17 — Sarawak will build two more convention centres, in Kuching and Miri each, says state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He said in Sarawak, the convention centre would be built next to the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) while for the one in Miri, the location had not been decided on yet.

“The design of the respective convention centres will be known after approval by the Sarawak government,” he said at a news conference on the Kuching Marathon 2022, here, today.

Abdul Karim said the new convention centre here might be two times bigger than the BCCK.

“Looking at the events held at BCCK, we find that it can no longer accommodate bigger ones

in future.

“If possible, we want the new convention centre in Kuching to be ready within 24 months,” he added.

On the Kuching Marathon 2022, Abdul Karim said it would start and end at Padang Merdeka, here, with the runs of 42 kilometres (km), 21 km, 10 km and 5 km, and the flagging-off as early as 1 am on Oct 2.

“So far, 8,906 people have registered for the event and out this number, 5,811 runners are from Sarawak and 3,095 from outside Sarawak including foreigners.

“The 639 foreign runners include 290 from Indonesia, Brunei (162), Singapore (105), United Kingdom (12), Kenya (7), Japan (6), China (12) and Hong Kong (6).

“The organisers have been asked to extend the participation registration for at least one week or two weeks after it closed on July 31,” he added.
