KUALA SELANGOR, Sept 5 — Five century old two-storey shop-houses in Jalan Sultan Ibrahim, Bandar Melawati, here, were destroyed in a pre-dawn fire today.

The incident at about 5.15am involved two empty premises, a clothing shop, a private temple and a unit housing swallow nests.

Director of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Selangor, Norazam Khamis, said the department received an emergency call at 5.20am.

He said a team of 32 personnel with fire tenders from the Kuala Selangor, Tanjong Karang, Bestari Jaya, Sekinchan and Sungai Besar Fire and Rescue Stations (BBP) rushed to the scene of the incident.

“According to initial reports, the fire initially involved two shop lots.

“None of the shop owners were at the scene during the fire and were at their respective homes,” he said when contacted, today.

Norazam said no casualties were reported.

“The estimated percentage of destruction to the five shop-houses was about 80 per cent.

“The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation,” he said.

The pre-war shop houses in Jalan Sultan Ibrahim, Bandar Melawati, are better known as Pekan Lama Kuala Selangor.
