KUCHING, Sept 12 — The first integrated development in Sarawak, known as Neu Pendington, can boost development in the Pending area as various infrastructures will be constructed, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the project, which is a collaboration between UDA Holdings Berhad (UDA) and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), is expected to be fully completed in 2029.

He said Pending is a strategic area as it is situated near the Sarawak River and Petra Jaya, which is rapidly developing, adding that the project will change the area’s landscape and dynamics.

“In terms of public transport, one of the stations (for the state’s Autonomous Rail Transit) is in Pendington. Nang nak lawan London kitak tok(We want to compete with London),” he said in jest at a press conference after the ground breaking ceremony of the project at the development site, here today.

‘Neu Pendington’ is a play on the word ‘new’ and Paddington, which is the name of an area in the city of London.

UDA chairman, Datuk Norliza Abdul Rahim said the first phase of the RM496 million development project will be completed in 2026 and the second phase will commence in 2027.

“This joint venture will give a return of almost RM98 million to SEDC, including 35 apartment units, 12 stratified office shop units and a hotel,” she said.

Norliza said UDA is also looking at several potential locations in Miri, Sibu and Bintulu as part of its efforts to explore developments in Sarawak and increase the ownership of residential properties and commercial spaces, especially among the Bumiputera group.

UDA and SEDC inked the joint development agreement in 2020.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari encouraged Sarawak-Malaysia My Second Home (S-MM2H) applicants to purchase units offered in Neu Pendington as an investment since it has been declared a development area that allows foreigners to buy its property.
