KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) are developing the Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy (STIE) Trend Watch Monitoring System to increase the percentage of researchers in the industry sector.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said this is because the country currently only had 15.83 percent of researchers in the industrial sector, while 79.2 percent of researchers were in higher education institutions.

“Through this real-time data monitoring system, the country’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) talent can be monitored and improved to meet related initiatives.

“This is expected to meet the target of a 10 to 15 percent increase in the number of researchers in the industry sector by 2030,” he said when speaking at the ASM Fellows Award Ceremony and Recognition of Malaysia’s Top Research Scientists 2022 today.

Dr Adham said the system aims to compile suitable strategies and initiatives based on data to mainstream STIE towards the socio-economic development of the country.

He said it will be able to empower public research institutes and government-related research organisations (GLROs) to be effective innovation intermediaries to connect researchers in higher education institutes and industry.

Separately, he said MOSTI has also urged ASM to intensify efforts to attract experts in the industry sector to be recognised as Fellows or be included in the list of Top Research Scientists of Malaysia.

He said the nomination of individuals from the industry sector will enable MOSTI and ASM to mobilise their involvement in the development of the country in a more active and effective manner.

In today’s event, Dr Adham presented the ASM Fellow Award to two Senior Fellows and 39 Fellows as well as honoured 29 Top Research Scientists of Malaysia for their contributions and achievements in STIE.

To date, ASM, an agency under MOSTI, has 28 Senior Fellows, 425 Fellows and 148 Top Research Scientists of Malaysia.
