IPOH, Feb 19 (Bernama) — The marine police seized 11,590 cartons of smuggled cigarettes with unpaid customs duties of around RM1.7 million in four raids around Sitiawan and Ayer Tawar, Manjung yesterday.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the contraband was found in the living rooms of four separate unoccupied houses during the raids between 1 pm and 4 pm.

“The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967,” he said in a statement tonight.

He also urged those with information on cigarette smuggling to contact the nearest police station, adding that the police will continue to step up efforts to tackle such illicit acts.
