BERLIN, May 22 — Facebook parent company Meta has been slapped with a record fine of €1.2 billion (US$1.29 billion) for a breach of EU data law, German news agency (dpa) quoted the Irish data protection authority DPC on Monday.

The case concerns Facebook’s involvement in mass surveillance by Anglo-American intelligence agencies, which was revealed by US whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The firm had violated the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, the DPC said.

The DPC is the national independent authority responsible for upholding the fundamental right of individuals in the EU to have their personal data protected.

There was no initial comment from Meta or its boss Mark Zuckerberg.
