Kuala Lumpur May 30 FMT: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) believes that fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, is “hiding” in Macau, according to a report.

Al Jazeera said MACC believed that other individuals wanted over the 1MDB scandal are also currently in Macau.

“This has also been confirmed by several individuals who have seen Jho Low in Macau,” said the anti-graft agency.

An Interpol Red Notice for Jho Low was approved and issued in 2018. Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said last year efforts to track the fugitive down were ongoing.

Jho Low has been charged in Malaysia and the US over allegations that he orchestrated the theft of US$4.5 billion from 1MDB. Beijing previously denied protecting the fugitive financier.

Al Jazeera also quoted a police source as saying a suspect in the 1MDB and SRC International cases, who was recently arrested by MACC, had been deported from Macau for overstaying his visa.

The suspect had been missing since 2018 but returned to Malaysia  in May. Upon his arrival at KLIA Terminal 2, the man was handed a notice to appear at the MACC headquarters

The news outlet reported that the man was 51-year-old Kee Kok Thiam.

“The investigation paper, focused on assets belonging to Kee in Singapore, has been completed and submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for the next course of action,” it quoted an MACC official as saying.

Previously, MACC, in collaboration with Singapore’s Commercial Affairs Department (CAD), seized a Wright Shaw Limited bank account which had about US$5.2 million (RM23.1 million).

To date, only former prime minister Najib Razak has been convicted and sentenced in the SRC International case. He is serving a 12-year jail term.
