KOTA BHARU, Oct 9 — The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is highlighting local Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) to the public through an informal approach as well as through learning, experimenting and competitions at all levels.

Its secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said such efforts aimed to get students and youth to be interested in STI through the National Science Week Carnival and Malaysia Techlympics.

“This carnival is organised in each state to celebrate the diversity and needs of each state by providing opportunities to local STI promoters and practitioners.

“The carnival offers various interactive sessions, such as STI-based exhibition in the booths, science demonstrations, a mini-planetarium, solar observation, Interactive Science and VR Planet displays and STI-based talks,” he said in a statement today.

He said the carnival in Kelantan would continue to give opportunities to local STI promoters and practitioners at Dewan Jubli Perak in collaboration with the State Education Department today.

Elaborating, Aminudin said that at the same carnival, MOSTI also organised the East Zone 2023 Malaysia Techlympics in a bid to cultivate interest among the younger generation towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through fun competitions.

“The programme, which was launched last year, can also cultivate youth with a critical mind, skill sets and innovations that are more meaningful and have a high impact.

“Various competitions that are technology-based, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), drones, coding and robotics, are being held at state and zonal levels. So far, Malaysia  Techlympics has received 1.7 million participation nationwide,” he said.

He said a total of 800 participants are expected to gather and compete in the east zone to qualify for the national finals, which will be held in Putrajaya in November.

He said the East Zone 2023 Malaysia Techlympics is the fifth to be held after the North Zone, Sabah Zone, Central Zone and Sarawak Zone, adding that the South Zone in Melaka would be the final zone.
