KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — Ireland planned to strengthen bilateral trade with Malaysia in the agriculture sector, particularly in the exports of meat and duck meat products.
These are the main highlights of Ireland’s Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine Martin Heydon’s courtesy call on Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu that took place at the Farmers Organisation Authority, yesterday.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) said in a statement today that this is the first meeting between the two leaders and will become a platform to discuss proposal for bilateral collaboration in the agriculture and food industry of both countries.
Both countries are also keen to continue close cooperation in the field of research and development in agriculture to achieve food security targets as well as increase bilateral trade in agriculture including fishery products such as oysters and crayfish.
In 2022, total trade between Malaysia and Ireland was RM419.35 million compared to RM425.15 million in 2021.
Comparatively, total trade from January to July this year had already registered a higher value of RM429.45 million.
Mohamad Sabu has also invited Ireland to participate in the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture & Agrotourism (MAHA) 2024 expo to promote agriculture and agro-food.
Also present were representatives from Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (Mardi), Agriculture Department, Fishery Department, Veterinary Services Department of Malaysia and KPKM senior officials.
