KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 — The regulatory action takens by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is not to restrict media freedom.
The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) in a reply posted on the Parliament’s website today said that it is to ensure that the dissemination of information is done responsibly and without spreading slander or inaccurate information, hateful speech as well as protecting the integrity of the constitutional monarch and democratic institutions.
“MCMC has the authority and duty to take regulatory action against the spread of false information, as well as offensive, threatening and defamatory content,” according to the ministry.
It was in response to a question by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN-Bera) regarding the status of the proposed drafting of a new act related to 3R (royalty religion and race) and the restrictions imposed on news portals such as Utusan TV, MalaysiaNow and TV Pertiwi.
MCMC also advises media practitioners and news outlets to refer to the Content Code which provides clear guidance on content standards in line with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).
“By complying with the Content Code, media practitioners can ensure responsible reporting in addition to avoiding overstepping the bounds of freedom of expression,” according to KKD.
The ministry mentioned that MCMC also took the initiative to hold several dialogue sessions and engage with media organisations to discuss the issues that arise.
This initiative will be implemented continuously as an inclusive step to create a more positive, harmonious and conducive digital environment for all.
