KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 — The Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) practises constant communication to enable the public to obtain a better understanding of the current economic situation via numerous platforms, said Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching.

She told the Dewan Negara today that one of KKD’s agencies, the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), for example, consistently produces news on domestic and global economic developments, and hosts forums with discourses and analysis by experts, through its radio and television programmes.

“Through its Economic News Services, Bernama focuses on providing news on the economy as well as infographics that are easily understood via its social media platforms such as Instagram, and X (Twitter).

“All the economic news moved by Bernama is uploaded to @BernamaBiz and can also be accessed at @bernamadotcom, which now has 1.1 million followers,” she said during Question Time.

Teo said this in reply to Senator Datuk Juhanis Abd Aziz who asked if the government planned to clarify the current economic scenario and issues at the grassroots level because a large portion of the population does not understand the present state of the national and global economy.

Teo also said that Bernama used visual explainers on social media platforms to explain government initiatives or current issues in a simple, attractive, and easily understood manner.

“Visual explainers are usually in the form of slides (maximum 10) and are used on Instagram with added graphics, video clips, and sound bites.

“In addition, Bernama also produces explainer videos to explain an initiative, or issue, or to clarify any confusion with official information sources,” she said.

Teo said the MyCheck platform that was established by Bernama three years ago for fact-checking has led to 293 reports on fake news.

The platform uses the long explanatory report method which is based on the International Fact-Checking Network standards, she added.
