KANGAR, 25 Jan – A 200-kilogramme (kg) dragon replica, which is being made by volunteers from the Perlis Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCCI), is set to be a special attraction at the Arau Chinese New Year Carnival from Feb 2-4.

PCCCI vice-president Ng Ban Hock said 20 volunteers began working on the dragon replica, measuring 20-metre long and 3.6-metre high, last October and are expected to complete it by next week.

“We chose to produce the dragon replica ourselves because it would cost more than RM30,000 to buy one. So, we decided to work together during our free time to make the dragon replica and the cost of the materials was over RM10,000,” he said when met by reporters here last night.

Ng said the volunteers would come to the PCCCI here to work on the dragon replica from 8 pm to midnight every day.

He said they produced a rabbit replica for last year’s Chinese New Year celebrations and hoped that the dragon replica this year would enliven the atmosphere and bring much joy to those celebrating the festival.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Chinese New Year Carnival in Pekan Lama Arau, Tay Tun Lian said members of the public will be able to take pictures with the replica dragon, which will be displayed by the river in Pekan Lama Arau.

“The dragon replica will continue to be displayed there even after the carnival ends as a new attraction to the public,” he said.
