JAKARTA, Feb 4 – Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin has called for enhanced collaborations between higher education institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia, citing significant potential for cooperation.
He said over 20 memoranda and agreements were signed in 2023, focusing on objectives such as dual master’s degrees and collaborations across various fields.
“In our interconnected world, mutual support is vital for both countries to improve educational excellence,” said Syed Md Hasrin.
He also expressed hope for changes in education policies and visa procedures, including practical training in both countries.
Speaking at a Public Lecture titled ‘Cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia in Improving Education,’ organised by Darunnajah University, he encouraged lecturers to participate in world-class research and technology exchange, and highlighted the potential of online education using advanced ICT.
He pointed out that the Malaysian government actively supports the implementation of double-degree or joint degree programmes, as well as establishing satellite campuses for cultural understanding, quality improvement, and global recognition.
According to Syed Md Hasrin, Malaysian higher education has gained global recognition, with about 150,000 international students from 165 countries studying in Malaysia last year, including 10,300 from Indonesia pursuing various degrees.
In 2023 alone, 6,280 new Indonesian students obtained student visas through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).
