JAKARTA, Feb 15 – Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto claimed victory in the first round of the country’s presidential election on Wednesday after preliminary results indicated he was on course to be elected leader of Southeast Asia’s biggest economy.
“All counts, all pollsters … showed figures that Prabowo-Gibran win in one round. This victory should be a victory for all Indonesians,” he told a crowd at an arena in central Jakarta, referring also to his running mate.
Quick counts conducted by at least six leading pollsters showed Subianto has secured about 58 percent of votes from the 90 percent of votes counted, while his two rivals, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, obtained around 25 percent and 16.5 percent of votes, respectively.
Speaking to his supporters on Wednesday night, Subianto said his team was grateful that all quick counts showed him to be on track to win the presidency in a single round but said “we must still wait for official results from (the) election commission.”
