HANOI, April 12 – Truong My Lan, chairwoman of real estate developer Van Thinh Phat in Vietnam, faced the death penalty on Thursday for embezzlement, Vietnam News Agency reported Thursday.

She faced other charges of 20 years in prison each for giving bribery and violating bank regulations. The highest sentence she faced was death penalty, said the news agency.

The indictment said holding 85 to 91.5 percent of the Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB)’s total shares, she caused damage of about 498 trillion Vietnamese dong (about 19.9 billion U.S. dollars) to the bank.

From January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2017, the defendant violated banking regulations and caused losses of more than 64 trillion dong (2.5 billion dollars).

From January 1, 2018 to October 7, 2022, she misappropriated assets of more than 433 trillion dong (17.3 billion dollars) in total, said the news agency
