KUALA LUMPUR,Mar 25 – Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) has started work to remove the gantry crane that toppled over at the Sg Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Highway (SUKE) construction site in Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras, on Monday and killed three foreign workers.

Prolintas in a statement yesterday said the operation to remove the crane and work on repairs began after the third body was extricated.

It added that the operation is expected to take several days as it is a complicated process.

“It is also due to safety factors involving residents in the area and workers at the site, and to ensure the highway structure remains solid and intact.

“Removing the heavy crane requires a process of cutting it into several smaller parts and bringing them down.”

To ensure the safety of residents, especially those living in Puncak Banyan Condominium, alternative roads have been paved since the day of the incident and opened for use.

Diversions and temporary closures of part of the routes at Persiaran Alam Damai will be carried out for both directions with immediate effect until repairs are completed.

Vehicles from Middle Ring Road 2 heading to Alam Damai will be diverted to Jalan Cerdas (Taman Connaught night market) to exit to Jalan Alam Damai near OCBC Bank.

“During the road closure, only affected residents living in nearby areas – Mandarina, Puncak Banyan and Altitude 236 Condominiums – are allowed to use the route,” the statement said.

“Traffic controllers, safety cones, warning signs and directions have been placed along the routes involved during the closure.”

In the incident, three Chinese nationals were crushed to death and a motorist was seriously injured when the crane toppled over at the SUKE construction site.
