KUALA LUMPUR, July 29  — Taiwan has shared experience and knowledge with Malaysia, through its smart medical technologies and solutions in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, said director-general of Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), Dr Lee Po-Chang.

Speaking in a webinar entitled “Taiwan and Malaysia, Joining Hands in Bringing Greater Health to Life” yesterday, Dr Lee said his country is fighting the pandemic through its universal health insurance technology.

“We built a MediCloud system to let medical information be shared between hospitals and clinics in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The TOCC (Travel, Occupation, Contact, and Cluster) contact tracing system is able to provide frontline medical staff with the means to retrieve and understand the patient’s full contact history,” he said during the webinar.

The webinar, hosted by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Taiwan (R.O.C), Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), and Kuala Lumpur Taiwan Trade Center, aims to showcase Taiwan’s latest medical treatment and smart living technologies.

The webinar also saw the participation of 11 Taiwan leading healthcare and medical industry leaders, including National Taiwan University Hospital Hsin-Chu Branch; Chang Gung Memorial Hospital; National Cheng Kung University Hospital; Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital; Shin Kong Wu Ho Su Memorial Hospital; Landseed International Hospital; TaiHao Medical, Insight Medical Solutions; Chiun Mai Communication Systems; Wel-Bloom Bio Tech and OmQi Biotechnology.

Taiwan Healthcare, in a statement issued today, said that during the webinar, the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, a well-known cancer treatment specialist hospital, impressed the attendees by sharing its patients’ successful treatment journey with proton therapy.

“Also, the National Taiwan University Hospital, Hsin-Chu Branch, the most iconic public hospital in Taiwan, introduced their dynamic image telemedicine service which provides patients with better services before their medical treatment abroad, from pre-operative evaluations to post-operative follow-up examinations.

“Amongst smart healthcare solutions, Insight Medical Solutions showcased their InsightEyes EGD, the world’s first magnetic endoscope, that offers a real-time examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

“With the improvement, the procedure is simple, painless and does not require the use of anaesthesia. The company is confident that the technology offers a viable alternative for patients who are averse to traditional endoscopy,” the statement read.

Apart from that, TaiHao Medical Inc’s breast ultrasound and scanning machine, with its function similar to an Artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, helps doctors in carrying out effective breast screening, to help reduce the possibility of misdiagnosis and overlooking of suspicious tumours.

“The AI-assisted ultrasound procedure for breast tumour screening greatly reduces risks of human error and improves the accuracy of the examination, and has been approved for marketing in the United States, Japan and Taiwan.

Another featured product is the Fusion Smart Healthcare system developed by Chiun Mai Communications Systems Inc. It provides a total solution based on real-time detection and wireless communication, which is suitable for hospitals and nursing homes, allowing workflow optimisation, efficiency improvement and safety protection, it said.

The webinar session also saw a full range of health food OEM services by Wel-Bloom Bio Tech Corporation, and the Quantum Biotech Cloud Health Management System by OmQi Biotechnology Co Ltd.

“Such solutions aim to build working relationships with Malaysian counterparts to open the way towards smarter and healthier lives for more people,” it added.
