LANGKAWI, July 8 — Fourteen cities in the country will implement the Green City Action Plan (GCAP) initiative between this year and 2025.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said three cities, namely Langkawi, Kota Bharu and Kuching, have been selected to implement the initiative this year.

He said the other selected cities such as Kangar, Kulim, Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Ipoh, Manjung, Teluk Intan, Seremban, Labuan, Penang and Seberang Perai, would implement GCAP intiative in stages.

“We need to make sure that our cities are sustainable, liveable, competitive and also resilient, they are among the objectives,” he told reporters after launching the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) & Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Green City Action Plan, here today.

According to him two cities, namely Melaka and Kota Kinabalu implemented the initiative in 2014 and 2019 respectively.

Mustapa said Malaysia would also cooperate with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative in the cities in the country.

On the selection of Langkawi for the implementation of the GCAP initiative, he said it coincided with its status as a popular island resort that is rich in natural treasures that need to be protected.

“To ensure Langkawi continues to achieve success, it is important to protect its environment and educated the people,” he said.

The GCAP is a series of recommendations on sustainable urban planning for the local governments to adopt in addressing pressing rapid-urbanisation consequences.
