KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — Malaysia has recorded 3.6 million 5G service subscriptions representing an adoption rate of 10.8 per cent as of Oct 31, 2023, according to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKD).

The ministry said that to boost adoption rate among consumers, the government with the cooperation of telecommunication companies launched the 5G Rahmah Package in August 2023 to offer an affordable service package bundled with 5G device for the lower income group and civil servants.

“As of Oct 31, 2023, the 5G Rahmah Package subscriptions amounted to 98,979 units,” it said in response to Senator Datuk Bobbey Suan who requested for an update on 5G Internet network development and 5G subscriptions. The reply was uploaded to the Parliament website yesterday.

KKD also said the government will redouble efforts to drive 5G adoption not only by the average consumer but also among various industries including education, transportation, agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing and public security.

The ministry noted that the 5G network implementation in the country is being actively conducted by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and the government targets to complete 7,509 5G sites covering 80 per cent of populated areas nationwide by year-end.

“As of Oct 31, 2023, a total of 6,057 5G sites have been developed with 5G service coverage in populated areas reaching 73 per cent,” it added.
